Shingles is type of skin rash that is painful, unilateral, has dermatome like eruption, and most commonly occurs in the thoracic region. It occurs as a result of reactivation of the chickenpox virus, which is caused by suppression of the immune system when cell-mediated immunity is suppressed that has been dormant in the dorsal root ganglia following chickenpox.
