Sgt. Van Winkle post-traumatic stress case, Evidence of diagnosis
Marine Sergeant Clint Van Winkle in his memoir “Soft Spots” shares his personal experience of the Iraq war and then his post-traumatic stress disorder. He flew to war on Valentine's Day 2003. His battalion was among the first wave of soldiers who crossed into Iraq, and his experience in combat was the Battle of Nasiriyah, followed by patrols across the country, house searches and operations in the dangerous slums of Baghdad. But after two tours of duty, some images would not leave his film a fragmented mental memory of the shooting of a little girl sweeping pieces of a destroyed tank splashed with blood; deletes several Iraqi men hiding behind a old wall, and wrong to go on a "blip", the remains of a Marine killed in combat. After his return, Van Winkle asked for help in a Veterans Administration center, and thus began a maddening journey through an indifferent system that promises to care for veterans, but in fact many of them abandoned. (Van Winkle, 2009) Riveting scenes of fighting against violence, the dark humor of soldiers engaged in a war that seems to make no sense, with moments of tenderness in civilian life ravaged by flashbacks, anger, and doubt, Soft Spots reveals the soul of a soldier like no other recent memories of the war that has consumed America.
