MBA assignment - case study

Executive Summary

This paper intends to explore a case study that focuses on the organization Lincoln Electric in China. It is assumed that I am hired by the general manager of the company to write a brief report, where I am suppose to advise him how to implement the company's incentive management system in its Chinese operations.

There are certain probable problems that may arise if the same human resource management practices are implemented in the Chinese operations. Thus, it is important that some necessary changes are made after analysing carefully and planning thoroughly for short term and initial modifications. One of the prime factors of incentive management and bonus reward system is trust. In United States a US citizen has a strong faith upon the person who writes and signs a pay check for him, whereas in China there is trust gap between the employer and his workers. In United States workers have a strong faith in the powerful American Judicial system and in the historical trends of Judeo-Christian morality that the contractual promise shall be fulfilled according to the laid terms and conditions. In addition to this, the culture of Asia is very acquiescent and group oriented. It is very less likely that the worker works tirelessly himself without instructions and without supervision.

In addition to this, for American employees the main source of motivation comes from the fact that their base salary fails to earn them poverty line income. They need bonuses in order to have a respectable pay. However, in the Chinese culture, food accounts for the main part of their living expenses. In china, workers need more regular salary and more of their salary at a regular basis. Actually, it is a customary practice in most of the cultures around the world that they need money on daily basis to buy food.

It can be concluded that while Lincoln Electric expand their business in to China, they should also implement the incentive management system. With some work on the short term changes in existing system shall minimize the risk of refusal. The most significant element is to create trust and a comfortable working zone at the early stage. The successful trends of Lincoln Electric witnessed in international base in last twenty years shall make a strong foundation for a success in China as well, with careful analysis and greater focus on the culture of China.
