Discussion and Analysis

The Mayans developed their own calendar (The Long Count) ca. 355 B.C. They were able to use their observations and mathematical prowess to calculate the future movements of stars across the sky. The result was that the Mayans discovered the effect of the earth's wobbling as it spins on its axis.

The year 2012 is soon upon us, but what does it mean? The date of December 21, 2012 has been calculated as the end of a Mayan b'ak'tun, a time period known as the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar. Interpretations of what this might mean include everything from apocalyptic scenarios to theories about a worldwide transformation into a "new age". There is, however, little evidence that this Mayan time period coming to an end is an end-of-the-world prophecy - although it has renewed interest in Mexico as a destination and in the country's ancient cultures.

The earliest attempts at decipherment took two directions. One involved an intensive analysis of the chronological component of Maya texts. Most Maya inscriptions have a calendrical framework in which dates are recorded at the beginning of sentences. Many of the details of the calendar were known from writers such as Landa and also from the remnants of the calendar that have survived to the present day. Although the Maya calendar is quite complex, with several intermeshing cyclical counts, it was almost completely deciphered by 1900.

The other direction of research involved non-calendrical glyphs. The focus (especially at first) was on the codices, and there was much discussion concerning the nature of the script. Early on it was determined that the script was not alphabetic. But was it syllabic or logographic in nature? Between 1890 and 1914, as intense discussion on this issue continued, much of the general content of the codices was worked out, and signs were read correctly in some cases.

Mayan Calendar: The End of the World 2012

One theory is December 21, 2012; we expect endless disasters in the form of huge hurricanes, floods and earthquakes. On the other hand, because the destruction of humanity and the earth as a whole could be the sun, the activity of which increases with each passing year. However, the most exciting version, connected with the planet Nibiru. It is assumed that in December 2012 Planet X will come to earth at the minimum possible distance. Some argue that because of the gravity of a giant planet on the earth will begin a series of global cataclysms. Others believe that gravity is so immense object will cause a collision ...
