ADD/ADHD and Mathematics

For this paper, we shall be covering the whereabouts of what are the implications of ADD and ADHD upon the students' learning abilities in the area of mathematics. Here, our main focus will be to identify curriculum that could easily help our students to learn the art of numbers and thus practice within their own capacity.

Evidence of Research

The Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - ADHD) appears during childhood and which has long been thought that disappeared in adolescents. However, up to 60% of children suffering from ADHD continue to have few patent symptoms in adulthood (work, relationships, parenting). Longitudinal studies and different researchers, conducted on several time intervals, show that the disorder is clinically significant among adults, with malfunction in the professional, family and emotional structure of humans. Furthermore, comorbidity is high, as in children, and can complicate the diagnosis and treatment. The treatment of ADHD is currently based largely on drugs and the application of psycho-education, along with psychotherapy in alignment to cater patients' need and requirements. According to Kristina Fiore (2010), it has been delivered and obtained those students who have been diagnosed with ADD or ADHD, do not have any problems or hindrances in the midst of creating and understanding instructions and class-based tasks intended to them. Their performances and overall evaluation were similar to those who were not diagnosed with ADD or ADHD.

In a rare effort to integrate ADHD into criminological theory, Unnever, Cullen and Pratt (2003) examined the relationship between ADHD and low self-control. The general theory of crime proposes that low self-control develops as a consequence of ineffective parenting. However, controlling for differences in parenting, Unnever et al found a history of ADHD medication to be a strong predictor of low self-control. In view of the significant genetic component in the etiology of ADHD, they concluded that a major share of low self-control is heritable. The study also found that low self-control completely mediates the association between ADHD and delinquency (see Unnever and Cornell, 2003, for similar findings related to bullying). From the standpoint of ADHD research, these findings are not surprising. According to Morgan and Lilienfeld (2000), ADHD is essentially a problem of self-control.

Underlying Causes of ADD/ADHD

In adults, ADHD appears, as well as in children, a controversial diagnosis, empirical studies and observations are essential. The discussion in the media and popular literature regarding the presence of the disease has been a core topic of conversation. In Western society, which tends to worship physicians could be the recognition that these common psychiatric diagnoses invented by a group of people at the round table and not discovered by scientists in a laboratory, because an unpleasant surprise. Results of the DSM the decision making process is a diagnostic classification, namely, ADHD, which is completely arbitrary and based solely on behavioral patterns.
