Basic Organizational Structure of the Law Enforcement Agency

The Maryland State Police is considered as the official state police force of the United States of Maryland. The head quarter of State Police is situated at 1201 Reisterstown Road in unincorporated Baltimore County. The structure of the Maryland State police is dependent upon the United States military and, composed of:

Department of State Police (commanded by the Colonel)

Bureaus (commanded by a Lieutenant Colonel)

Commands (commanded by a Major)

Troops (commanded by a Captain)

Divisions (commanded by a Captain or Civilian Director)

Barracks (commanded by a Lieutenant)

Sections (commanded by a Captain or Lieutenant or Civilian Director)

Units (commanded by a First Sergeant)

History of Maryland State Police

Before 1921, there is no police force in the state of Maryland but, in 1921, there is an unexpected increase in the crime and, the Commissioner of motor vehicles made a team of police officers and, given jurisdiction to enforce traffic and criminal laws. This was the first unit force in the Maryland with the plainclothes and, investigative nature. In 1935, Maryland State police was considered as the separate unit of State government, because they were not receiving revenues from the commissioner of motor vehicles. This force had more power than the previous unit of Police force and, got powers to maintain law and enforcement in the state and, maintained a training school. It was also made a small sector of the department of Public Safety and Services in the year of 1970.

In 1994, this department was separated and made as the Department of Maryland State Police and, in 1995; it was renamed as the Department of State Police. The present superintendent Marcus L. Brown was appointed in 1st August, 2011. In the history of the force, there were forty three state troopers killed when, performing their duties.

Basic Functions

Basic functions of the State police are to enforce the laws on motor vehicles and criminal activities. The major purpose of the State police is to safeguard the life and property of citizens. The department aims to provide surety to safeguard the property and other assets of citizens without any discrimination. The Department has missions to preserves peace, protect life and property, detect and stop crimes, and enforce laws to its subordinates. The department is allowed to arrest law breakers and criminals and, maintain law in public places. The department also ensures the safe flow of traffic on streets and highways and, also cooperates with other state agencies.
