Introduction

I have a dream is an inspirational speech delivered by Martin Luther king to emphasize over the critical situation of Negroes, who are still living in the Dark Age. Whereas he examines that how the blacks are suffering in the crucial situation, to convey the true feelings of African Americans. This is an argumentative and persuasive appeal to the readers in order to make them aware about the duality that is among the blacks and whites; they are not treated equally in America (Preston, pp 7-197). The speech of the king become noticeable and effective to the readers because of the continuous use of repetition of words that is also the strategy of the king to give the national wakeup call to take a step towards Negroes for their welfare. The speech also leaves the tremendous effect on the minds of people. Although the speech was more effective when the king first delivered it in 1963. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" is filled with extremely moving and thought provoking words. Language is a powerful implement. Just a word can attack an array of emotions. A consummate writer contrives a diversity of techniques to strengthen their proposal. In Martin Luther King Junior's famed speech, "I Have a Dream," King uses the three rhetorical applications (Marrin, pp 34-188): ethos, pathos and logos to encourage his audience while addressing several eloquence structures within his speech. MLK was a leader of rhetoric and public speaking. His speech is very effective because of his use of different languages in leveling up his voice to get the attention of the audience. His character has drawn the audience into supporting him and there he gave everyone something to strive for - a goal to reach. The actives of his moral beliefs of non-violence are very evident in the make up of Martin Luther King Jr.'s integrity (www.americanrhetoric.com).

In a time when blacks and whites were segregated, Martin Luther King Jr. was a voice of reason. He wrote the "I Have a Dream" speech in response to the unfairness received by the African American population. The intention of the speech was to reveal his dream of brotherhood for all, to achieve racial justice for every one including both the black and white races. While King is speaking to all who are engaged with the oppressive segregation, he is mainly addressing a black audience (King, pp 440-44). He induced against feelings of doubt toward "our white brothers." It is obvious that he is speaking directly to black Americans. While attractive to his audience's emotions, he used logic and the groundwork of his moral character to inspire his audiences.
