Manufacturing Depression by Gary Greenberg

But it could also be that depression has expanded like Wal-Mart, swallowing up increasing amounts of psychic terrain, and that, also like Wal-Mart, this rapidly replicating diagnosis, no matter how much it helps us, and no matter how economical, is its own kind of plague.

This statement by Gary Greenberg indicates the significance of expended conceptions about depression. Over the years the term depression has been revolutionized. Greenberg identified that, depression which was significantly overlooked in the past has been shaped into a psychotic disorder. In his statement the author personified depression as Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart is one the biggest chain of departmental stores in the United States. The business is sufficiently and significantly expanding all over the country. Such vast level of expansion and the availability of almost everything in the inventory have definitely made it the biggest and widespread network for departmental store not only in the United States but all over the world. Same is the case with depression (Greenberg, 2010). The study of depression has expanded over the years. There are several psychological studies conducted over the concept, yet, according to Greenberg the element of affliction cannot be ignored. I totally agree with the claim presented by Greenberg in “Manufacturing Depression”.

A common perception about depression is related to emotional and psychological traumas, like, disappointment, anguish, confusion or melancholy which are backed by unhealthy and unfavorable circumstances. The personification of depression as Wal-Mart and then continuing with the argument of presenting it as a plaque indicates that the more we learn about depression and the more human beings become aware of this disease the more it expand, like a plague. From a psychoanalytic perspective, depression is basically the development of a duel. Mourning for something lost, something that had and no longer exists. In all situations we are experiencing as something unattainable, something the person wants to have and has not been achieved. However, unlike other disorders, depression cannot be easily defined by its origin, so it can be connected to the patient's history and not be a cause directly related in time and space with the onset of symptoms. It is confirmed that the core of depression, cannot be seek nor crying, nor sorrow, nor psychomotor inhibition, since all these states may or may not be present in a depressed person (Greenberg, 2010).

Greenberg indicates that the concept and expansion of depression and they way people commonly use this term is what that serves as an epidemic. Depression has not been expanded as a disease but the regularity and commonality of this concept has turned it into an epidemic. Awareness about a disease is one thing but when this awareness is turned into a fad or if subjected to media hype then it is more devastating. However, something which is present is the kind of ideas have in common that all those cases in which at least one of these manifestations is present. It is the non-realization of a desire by which reach an ideal, or the achievement of ...
