NTPC Limited or National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd is the largest thermal power generating company of India. NTPC is the sixth largest thermal power generator in the world and the second most efficient utility in terms of capacity utilization based on data of 1998.
NTPC was founded in 1975 to give boost to power development in the country as a wholly owned company of the Government of India. Presently, Government of India holds 89.5% equity in the company and the balance 10.5% is held by FIIs, Domestic Banks, Public and others. NTPC is engaged in engineering, construction and operation of power generating plants. It also provides consultancy in the area of power plant constructions and power generation to companies in India and abroad. NTPC was among the first Public Sector Enterprises to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Government in 1987-88. Since then, every year, NTPC has been placed under the 'Excellent category' (the best category). In recognition of its excellent performance and tremendous potential NTPC has been given the status of "Navratna" by the Government of India. National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), a Navaratna Public Sector Undertaking has been conscious about the energy conservation in its plants at various locations in India. NTPC this time decided to go for energy audit for its Corporate Office at SCOPE Complex in New Delhi. The corporate office of NTPC is spread in 16 floors in three cores and has an approximate area of 7466 Sq meter.
Present System
The total lighting load for the corporate office is 165.4 kW. The installed lighting load mainly consists of 20 W FTLs (2172 fixtures) in coffers made in the roof. 40 W FTLs (1748 fixtures) also constitute a significant part of the lighting load installed in coffers and in the hidden grooves between roof and walls. The electricity consumption was around 1.5 Million Units during 2004 and the electricity bill was around Rs. 85 lakhs for the same duration. The major lacuna of the lighting system at NTPC was that total light of 20W and 40 W FTLs placed in the coffers and grooves didn't fall on work place fully. In a few of the rooms there is heavy lighting load (like meeting rooms etc) and are unoccupied for substantial time in a day.
Methodology
The electrical and lighting data was measured and the baseline parameters were prepared. It was observed, 40 W FTL takes 50W power and 25W FTL consumes around 25W power. The lighting lux at work place, corridors etc at various locations was measured and compared to the lighting benchmark parameters. The specific power consumption (W/Sqm) was calculated and shown in Fig-1. The existing specific power consumption was found to be 22.8 W/Sqm. The existing system and many new systems with the proposed lighting were simulated in DiaLux software and results were made confirm by implementing the recommendations in a certain area of NTPC Scope Complex.
