MAINTAINING SOCIAL CONFLICT

Role Of Language In Causing And Maintaining Social Conflict

Maintaining Social Conflict

Introduction

Humans rely on languages and speech every day because it is an integral part of human civilization. From a philosopher's standpoint, one could say that human ability to communicate verbally is part of what makes us human. What, then, would the philosopher say about those who are incapable of verbal communication? This is the plight of those who either have severe difficulty with speech or altogether lack the ability to speak due to autism. For autistic individuals, this is their reality: a world with limited, and sometimes completely devoid of, vocabulary. Autism is a fairly common condition that affects about 5 in 10,000 individuals (Piven, 1997), and with it comes the language deficit that partially defines the condition itself. Difficulties with language use and acquisition are two prominent symptoms of autism, and there may also be issues with nonverbal communication. These difficulties in turn lead to problems with social interactions. Research has suggested a number of brain irregularities that are responsible for the language deficits, and although the irregularities cannot be corrected, some progress has been made in designing methods that can be used to aid in language acquisition (Cotter, 2008,, 655).

Introduction

There is a control on the structures of interaction that we identify as follows:

Selection of shifts, distribution of papers

The dominant groups can determine who can speak (write) of a given subject, who can go, how and under what circumstances. For example, only in certain circumstances the doctor is going to the house of sick sick people in general are going to the doctor. Likewise, a teacher is still the place and time of your student examination. When a meeting at the company, is the director of the same judge who may be present, may be that you have a secretary but she usually does not speak. Of significance here the speaker's discursive role, and traditional fixed categories are socially defined: who starts the speech, who can go, who can close.

 Differential access to speech act

Who has the power determines the gender to be used in a speech situation. I remember the work of an Austrian professor, my friend, who published an interesting article in which he showed how the discourse produced in the courts. In one example showing how a middle class man could speak up to seven minutes to tell his story, a poor woman in the same situation, could only answer questions from the judge, she could not choose at that time or duration or type of speech. This shows that access to different genres and some do not really have free access to the speeches. Whoever controls the discourse genre also exerts control over the acts of speech.

Controlling Language

This control can be exercised over all aspects of speech and communication. To identify ways I can control the language from the levels of written or spoken, of the properties or categories that discourses have and give way to the elites to legitimize or call and have control over the listeners / viewers ...
