General Description of the Condition

ALS is a life risking disease that has negatively impacted millions of people each year. The threats associated with the disease are more dangerous because there no cure which has yet been defined for the disease. Even today, there are investigators who are working on ways in which the cure can be determined. This is important because the treatment of ALS IS still unknown and many people are suffering from it. The reason why ALS exists is unknown despite the fact that MM and neuropathology have been used to study the process of the disease. Moreover, there are various possibilities that have been predicted since these serve as the causes. Some of these include enzyme deficiencies and environmental factors.

The full form of ALS is Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and is more famously known as Lou Gehrig's infection. This is neurological contamination that has a negative impact on the neurons. However, the diagnosis of ALS has yet not been revealed. Therefore, the signs and symptoms of the disease are the only way in which it can be determined. Although there is one cure that has been identified, however, even that is not perfectly viable. In general terms, ALS can be characterized because of the infection and the increase in the symptoms can help a doctor determine the disease. In the ALS patients, the breathing power reduces and this results in the redevelopment of dead neurons (Abreu, et.al, 2010).

Etiology

Certain factors help us in determining if a patient is suffering from ALS. Mainly, there are three communities in western Pacific that include Guam, the Kii Peninsula of Japan, and West New Guinea. Within these populations, the disease is related more commonly to Parkinsonism and Alzheimer's disease.

Incidence and Prevalence

ALS takes place in an irregular manner in a patient. Mostly ninety percent of the people tend to become victim of this disease without the presence of ancestral history. However, there are only ten percent of the people who get infected by this disease due to ancestral history. The infection is more prevalent in the males than compared to the females and its prevalence increase after every ten years of the life. Individuals are more prone to get infected by it mainly when they turn forty and especially when they reach the age of 74 (Aebischer, et.al, 2007).

Signs and Symptoms

There are two main risk factors that are involved with ALS. These two main factors are age and relations history. The risk is more common in laborers since their profession is hefty and repetitive. Moreover, they also get prone to trauma and electric shock due to the nature of their jobs. Besides this, marijuana also plays a major role because of its properties that may often lead to ALS. Since marijuana results in things such as airway obstruction, decrease in saliva and appetite stimulation, it can also increase the chances of ALS.
