Logos, Ethos, Pathos

The author wrote a story based on her “Facing Poverty with a Rich girl's Habits” as a girl. She was rich, but suddenly her father lost all his money due to bankruptcy and since then everything changed overnight. After that they moved to America to line in an ugly house with a Korean mother and her children. Some other children called her F.O.B (fresh of the boat), which meant in, past Korean immigrants came to America by boat. Initially she had no idea what it meant, as it was the first English phrase that she learned after reaching America. Additionally, she had a hard time in America because of the luxuries she had back home in Korea. She always had a chauffeur to take her to school a cleaner to prepare everything and clean her house, and a governess to help her to do her homework (Spriggs, 2006).

When she moved to America she has to do it all by her, and that is why she found it humiliating. Moreover, she did not like to study and stay with habits and memory of rich girls. She realized that she will have to adjust with the situation sooner or later. The author tries to convey the message of staying positive in every situation; people get success and live a great live because they accept changes. She tries to convey it through the ending of the story like what Suki kim did at the end. The author also uses some strategies to get her goals into the audience's heart. It would be interesting to see what role ethos, pathos and logos has played to be affective in audience. Ethos will show the truth, pathos shows the emotional side of the story and logos represents the real story as in what happened.

Ethos, or the ethical appeal, means to convince an audience of the author's credibility or character. The author used ethos in this story when she used the phrase “I had never done homework without a governess helping me”. The character in the story seems credible because she had rich people's habits. It was true that she was able to afford a governess for herself who use to help doing homework but now she cannot.
