Mastication is an important, complex task that directly impacts quality of life. Many orthodontists hope to improve masticatory function with treatment, to be able to provide a service to patients in addition to aesthetic enhancement. However, no objective assessment is routinely performed to determine if this functional improvement actually occurs. A common measure of masticatory function in research settings is masticatory performance, which evaluates the patient's ability to break down food and is influenced by a variety of anatomical, physiological and psychological factors.
The relationships among these factors and masticatory performance are the focus of this study. Factors that influence performance the most can provide a clinical tool allowing orthodontists to use masticatory performance as an outcome measure of treatment. Only then will orthodontists be able to better direct their treatment at the important factor or factors that will improve masticator function.
