Introduction

The Middle Age has no specific time frame present in the book 'The Norton Anthology of English Literature'. Both the poems and play is from different centuries. The Middle Age period is the revolutionary time when Christianity was highly spreading religion. There is no argument left with calling it the Age of Faith. The discussion would be defining the reasons that why is this Age considered as the age of Faith.

Discussion

It is completely accurate to refer The Middle Age as Age of Faith. This was the period when religion is practicing and dominating in the society where music, literature, art were dominating. Christianity is the most dominant religion. According to George Holmes; “the emergence … of Christian literary forms… a popular religious culture centered on processions, icons, and relics.” This dominance of Christianity raised a holy war. The crusades were the ones who fought for God. Crusade started the war against Urbans where as Alexius wanted the Urban to help them against Turks. Christians were suppose to fight in opposition to infields. However, they get offers of materials from Church in order to save their shrines and other lands. They have offered a number of benefits as food, clothes and Islamic spread of arts and science. St. Bernard quoted about crusades “Rejoice…if you live and conquer in the Lord, but exalt and glory even more if you die and join the Lord” (Koenigsberger .G.H. pg187). The quest had renewed when cathedral schools were spread. Preaching was started in churches those schools have started spreading a new ideology of religion and universities played a huge role for its spread.
