Learning about Learning

University is a machine

“University is a machine for achieving a particular purpose or producing a particular result”. Do you agree with this statement? Most of the people agree with this statement because the only purpose of university is getting a good job in future. Society's understanding of a university is that it is a gateway for people to find better jobs in the future. The better the university, the better job individual will have. I totally disagree with this statement that university is a factory for getting job? I totally agree with Oakeshott and his views. He believes that University are indeed losing track of their function to be pursuit of learning for most of the individuals. University provides rule and regulation of learning and it is responsibilities for students must follow this. People should want to do something not because of preconceived ideas of how things are work but because they believe that it helps them for better understanding. Science help people to get rid of the fixed and preconceived ideas and faulty prevent ideals and purpose from being the primary inspiration of human activity.

Micheal Oakeshoot's Views

Micheal Oakeshott is a professor of political science and philosophy. He told and arguments at point that “How a university is not a machine for achieving a specific purpose or producing a particular result, is a manner of activity “(Oakeshott, 1989, p.13). Oakeshott stating that a University serves no purpose but to be a manner human activity. Today students do not want to do anything for society and humanity. Every student wants to earn money more by the source of education. A Question that arises from this is: Why he believes that ideals and purposes are never themselves the source of human activity. Basically, it comes about due to science. With the prevalence of science, preconceived ideas about the world, we are becoming less and less influential. However mere human ideals and purposes are not sufficient anymore for the inspiration of human activity (Oakeshott, 1989, pp.16).

Human Activities in the Past

Boucher (1993)stated that when reviewing how ideals and purposes informed human activity in the past .Before man began to investigate how certain things were or worked ,he choose to believe that things were the way they were simply because he was told .Looking back at Christopher Columbus. We find that at his time he lived in a society that believed the ...
