Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Pyramid
According to Maslow's theory, one can fulfill his or her physiological needs in accordance with the relative urgency of the needs. Safety needs tend to influence human behavior in distinctive ways and these may include the need for shelter, need for interaction with other people etc (Maslow, 1943, 39). Love needs relate to the concepts of belongingness and relationships within an organization. Esteem needs tend to satisfy extreme needs of an individual. For example, if an employee's self esteem is hurt, he may feel negative about his surroundings and vice versa. The need to self actualize refers to the concept of maximizing potential leading to peak achievement.
Validation of Maslow's Hierarchy of Human Needs
Behavioral theory is critical for this research because it builds on what has been proven or already established. His Hierarchy of Human Needs theory was chosen because there are different levels of motivation as well as different levels of employee performance. Maslow states that there are at least five sets of goals, which may be called basic needs. These are briefly physiological, safety, love, esteem, and self actualization. He adds that people are motivated by the desire to achieve or maintain the various conditions upon which these basic satisfactions rest and by certain more intellectual desires. These basic goals are related to each other and are arranged in a hierarchy.
The first step needed to investigate the performance-motivation relationship is to measure a employee's performance level and motivational level with respect to Katzenbach and Smith's employee performance curve and Maslow's Hierarchy Human Needs respectively. Measurement for these two entities was accomplished by giving individuals on a employee both a motivational survey and employee performance survey.
If there is any value in using "theory" and "model" as synonymous, it probably exists when a theory is set forth as a set of postulations with the relations among the parts clearly specified (Chung, 2006, 75). The postulated model shows the proposed relationship between the employee motivation scale and Maslow's Hierarchy of Human Needs scale. Assuming the lowest motivated employee correlates to the lowest motivational level while the highest motivated employee correlates to the highest motivational level is the main logic of relating Katzenbach and Smith's employee performance scale with Maslow's Hierarchy of Human Needs scale in the proposed model.
