EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The purpose of this study is to analyse the impact of leadership and performance management systems on the success of leading supermarkets in Papua New Guinea. In order to fulfil the purpose of this study, the researcher has incorporated a qualitative study methodology. The information was collected through secondary research (literature review) as well as primary research (interviews). A sample of ten supermarkets was chosen to collect information on the topic of leadership and performance management and its impact on the success of supermarkets in Papua New Guinea. With the help of this research methodology, the researcher was able to find out that the key to performance is not a formal process, but good training, timely and honest feedback, establishing an environment that encourages engagement on all levels. This is achieved by the manager (leaders) working hard to establish trust with their team and is done every day, not once a year in a formal process. It is important to understand the role of leaders (managers) within the super markets as they set the tone for the people who ultimately achieve program performance targets.
