Abstract

This paper is about the leadership approaches implemented at the Southwest airlines, and how they are using the leadership skills in order to engage the employees in achieving the overall goals and objectives of the organization. Paper also has reelection about the bad patch of the company, and it also includes the ways that how company cope up this phase with the strong leadership approaches. The many faces of leadership have been discussed as an important role in motivating employees of Southwest Airlines.

In the second part of the paper, there are some suggestions about how company can make more advantage through their leadership. It also has a suggestion about the employee empowerment, and the involvement of employees in the decision making. Effective leadership increases the employees concern for the betterment of the company, and it makes them own company's vision and mission.

From the earliest times till present, people always have concerned about the leadership. It is the leadership that leads the organization from the bad times to the top of the charts. There are several examples of effective leadership in which due to the leadership companies came out off the critical phases and performed at their best (Armstrong & Kotler , 2004). Competent leaders have determined nations, corporations, teaching systems, and the organized lives of the population. In comprehensible terms, in the process of leadership, a person uses its all of the resources in an efficient way to achieve success with the help of control and proper implementation of its skills and approaches (Bennis, 1985).

In USA, the domestic airline industry had to face decline in 1990. At that time, almost 72% of customers reduced their air traveling due to raise in faire charges. Each and every airline company was facing intense competition and, profit margin was very less. South West airline was at 3rd position at that time, with very low profits.

It that difficult period, company faced the problem with their effective and effective leadership. Company did not change their objectives and remain strict to their mission and vision, and use their all resources to achieve their goals. Company focused on the customer satisfaction and became highlighted among the other competitors. Company has very bright and efficient leaders at that time, which supported the company in the critical phase, and put the company gain on the road to success. The Southwest airline has the highest market share and gives tough competition to other companies through their leadership.
