Introduction
Leadership
Leadership is a process through which others are influenced to understand and then form a consensus about the common goals. A leader is a person who plays the role of a facilitator for his or her team in order to motivate them to make a collective effort to accomplish the shared objectives (Yukl, 2009).
According to Yukl (2009) leadership is a process which is enacted upon by leaders in the context of a group to achieve a common goal shared by both the leader and his or her followers. Both leaders and their followers are consequentially affected by each other because both work in collaboration to achieve a common goal.
Therefore, leadership is an interactive event whereby a two-way transaction takes place between the leaders and followers. Since leadership is a process and not a characteristic or a trait it is not restricted to a few individuals. Meaning, leadership can be undertaken and executed by anyone and in a group setting is not limited to one person only.
The backbone of leadership is influential power. As leadership operates in groups, thus, a leader is one who can exercise influence over a number of people to push them towards the achievement of a common goal. When this influence is ethical, it results in a positive outcome and enhances the organizational effectiveness and boosts the performance.
