We spend most of our lives with others. It is hence, important to learn to get along with others and function adequately in social situations. Communication is the act by which an individual establishes a contact with another that allows you to transmit information. The communication involves various elements that may facilitate or hinder the process. Certain communication skills help us to improve interpersonal relationships. Interpersonal communication is a relatively modern concept in the business world. But it has become central to almost every relationship around the globe no matter it is a business relationship or personal. Interpersonal communication can help any individuals to properly interact with their environment and people around them, to convey the feelings appropriately (Stewart, 2009).
Marriage between two persons is not a mere union of two physical forms. It is the union of two minds and two souls. Unless the two minds work in tandem, no other physical perfection will help in saving the marriage. Compatibility in marriage means the couple has a good understanding physically, mentally and emotionally and of course, financially too. Effective communication between two people occurs when the receiver interprets the message in the sense intended by the sender. One of the most common reasons marriages break up is that husbands and wives do not know how to communicate or handle conflicts (Burley, 2005).

According to some authors, the principles of interpersonal communication are: "People communicate because that communication is necessary for psychological well-being. Communication is not only a human need but a means to satisfy many. Interpersonal communication skills should not be measured solely by the degree to which community behavior helps to satisfy its individual needs, but also by the degree to provide the other the satisfaction of their own. “Interpersonal relationships are hence, a key issue in our lives, functioning not only as a means to achieve objectives, but as an end in it. So it should be clear that the promotion of interpersonal relationships is not an optional task or may be left to chance (Bernstein, 2010).
