Today globalization has enabled people to learn a global language in order to interact, communicate and understand thoughts of different people while living in a global village. Every country have its own culture, traditions, lifestyles and languages but in order to interact with people of different nationalities it is important to learn or have a knowledge of a universal language. Nowadays English is a language that has the privilege of becoming a universal language. People of different nationalities no matter what their mother language is they need to learn, have the ability to speak and understand the English language. According to (Dorneyi and Ushiboda, 2009) in recent times learning a second language has become complex sociological issue where language is related to the identity, ethnicity and hybridity. The motivation of learning has increased with the increase in globalization and it is important to know the theories that motivate people to learn a second language. It is very important for the instructors to play their part in enhancing the motivation of the learners and made them understand the achievements of learning a second language.
Organization of the Study
The research report will try to examine and find out the importance of learning a second language, it will also analyse the motivation of the people behind learning a second language and theories will help in understanding the relationship between the motivation and achievements from learning a second language. The report will also have an analysis of the impact of someone's self-system behind learning a second language especially English and what will the learning of the second language like English will improve the quality of my English language or it will deteriorate it. The report will take into consideration different researches and theories to find out the factors behind the motivation of learning any other language, what will be the role played by the self-system and will improvement come in my English language by properly learning the second language.
Literature Review
According to (Lightbown and Spada, 2006) motivation depends on the capability of a person to learn any other language other than his or her mother tongue. It is due to the environment or the increase in interaction with the people belonging to different communities and backgrounds that urge people or motivate them to learn a second language; it can be French, German, Chinese, English or etc. There are different sociocultural theories that provide a larger view of acquiring a second language. According to the behaviourists theorist a second language can be acquired by intimidating, reinforcing, practicing and making a habit of using a second language. This theory faced criticism by the Innatist Perspective that the universal grammar law restricts people from learning the language around them but it is important for them to get proper education in order to get proficiency in speaking, writing and understanding the second language.
