Introduction

There are many ideas that tend to interpret distinct aspects in human development. In Developmental Psychology, theories rule the reality of human growth. Considering the case asserted earlier, does it suggest that the discovering profited in studying this area is not reliable? Jean Piaget, Fowler and Lawrence Kohlberg are some of theorists who ventured in the field of Psychology, specifically in human development. Consequently, using Thomas's benchmark of judgment, this paper aspires to weigh, contrast and assess the assumptions and assertions of these proponents.

Analysis Piaget, a cognitivist and pioneer of the Cognitive Development Theory, focused on the cognitive facet of human development. He provided a comprehensive picture of how conceiving is processed among persons, completing that the distinction between mature persons' and children's conceiving is qualitative and not quantitative. He claimed that development occurs in distinct, discernable, and observable stages. Additionally, he made an assumption that developmental growth is independent of experience and founded on a universal characteristic. Piaget's idea assumes that development is unidirectional with all children coming to each stage at roughly at the identical age.

Kohlberg, an American psychologist, tried to expand the theory of morality that Piaget gave briefly. He assumes that there are 3 levels of morality that each individual faces — Preconvention, Conventional, Post Conventional— that are then subdivided in stages. According to him, children in middle childhood, start to perceive themselves as to blame to other ones because of the significance of getting along and of being a good citizen. They search to proceed appropriately because people issue to them, not just to avoid punishment. Children's evolving psychological comprehending intensifies their sensitivity to human needs and contributes to empathy for others. Whereas a preschooler may sympathize with another but not know what to do, older children are more expected to assist a classmate who is assaulted by a bully or to lift money to help young kids in a evolving country.

Fowler's (1981) model of faith development describes young adulthood as a time of personal responsibility for existential attitudes. According to Helminiak's (1987) model, early adulthood is characterized by a conscientious stage, which involves a restructuring of one's life based on one's own personal existential views. The two final stages of his model, compassionate and cosmic, deal with the development of more realistic perspectives of one's self and reality, with self-actualization as a potential outcome (Helminiak, 1987). Alexander et al. (1990) have proposed a theory which accounts for peak or spiritual experiences across the lifespan, suggesting that such experiences describe postrepresentational stages of human development beyond Piaget's (1963) formal operations stage. Hamel et al. (2003) have also outlined the development of transcendent-actualization, which describes an individual's growth towards a transpersonal self. A model of existential development has been proposed by Adams (2006), which describes a move towards a greater understanding of one's existence.
