ABSTRACT
As an interdisciplinary and integrative, international business knowledge exchanges with other academic areas. The entry of the theories, models, constructs and empirical findings gives theoretical and methodological basis of the field, while the output represents the impact on other academic areas. The purpose of this study was to investigate knowledge flows of entry and international business through daily citation counts as the main indicator. Knowledge imports carry, however, a number of potential risks. As it will be often the case for goods and services, those imports may be ill-adapted to the target market. Findings brought from another discipline may reflect the routines and underlying assumptions of the exporter rather than the needs and requirements of the importing discipline. In this paper, we will investigate the knowledge flows into and from international business, using journal citation counts as the primary indicator. Focusing on the sub-area of management, we analyze cross-citations between the Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS) and a group of the leading management journals over a 13-year period. Implications for the network location of the field, its content, impact and competitive position are outlined. Suggestions for the future direction and development of international business are drawn. While the importation of ingredients from other areas of knowledge, international business will be also a producer and exporter of academic knowledge. Knowledge, or the value added created in the form of empirical findings, research methodologies and testing and development theory, flows in the underlying disciplines of international business as well as in other academic areas. The flow rate of outflow will be a "balance of trade skills, which translates into an impact academic standing and position within wider knowledge networks.
