The article “Parents or prisons”, written by Jennifer Roback Morse is a compelling examination of an important and most common issue of the youthful delinquency that is said to increase due to the single-parent homes (Morse, 2003). It is quite certain to say that the article is very lucidly written and is quite self explanatory. In order to make a strong claim and to support the argument raised in the article the author makes efficient use of other studies supporting the same concern. The landscape of the juvenile system in the US has seen a drastic shift owing to the sweeping policy changes enacted by state governments. Many studies have proved that most of the youth offenders emerge due to lack of parental supervision or from single-parents households. According to the author children that have good upbringing by their parents and are not brought up by single parents tend to turn more responsible adults in future.
Discussion
On the contrary, if the article is read in depth and carefully many serious issues that are not discernible, would come across. For example the author segments her sections containing evidence and does not regularly provide statistics. Many of these changes are a replica of the changes that have been made to the adult system of justice. The primary objective of these changes at the state level was to reduce the gap in the justice system for adults and that for juveniles, modify the guidelines on sentencing and bring consistency in juvenile dispositions. According to the author and the 1993 analysis presented by her, she states that there is a high probability for a boy to become a criminal when he grows older, if he is raised without a father. But she does not present any figure (Buck-Willison, 2009).
