Text Summary and Reflection For Londoners, life has always been fast and happening. They form a part of society that was marked by various developments over time. While the city advanced to new heights as a result of progress and modernization; certain social vices and trends also plagued the city life while it made progress. A lot of issues like diversity crises, lack of jobs for women, family conflicts, unemployment, social inequality, discriminations towards racial backgrounds and other problems were highlighted in this era. These trends and vices plagued the city and deprived it of many societal benefits that could occur otherwise. This chapter deals with the trends of prostitution in the period between 1860s and 1890s. The chapter sub-part “An Unfortunate” deals with the results of a survey in which 1600 prostitutes worked at Mill bank Penitentiary imprisoned in the late 1880s. In the city, it was easy to arrange for crime and mischief. Some types of crimes that were common in those times, included, for example, murder out of jealousy or passion, thefts and robberies committed anywhere and so on (White, 2007). These could be unusual happenings for a small city or town, but for London, it was a matter of daily routine. The tradition of prostitution, set out in the century, continued for a long time following the nineteenth century London incidences. The newspapers reported every now and then, about unidentified corpses, caught in the Thames, or the brutal robbery that took place in the urban areas.
