James Hero vs. Hemmingway Hero



Thesis statement

Hemingway remodeled masculinity in modern American literature through his seemingly simplistic but internally complex characters, which grossly contrasts with characters such as Winterbourne in Henry James Daisy Miller, written in the late 18th century, who tend to be more internally simplistic.

The modern literature influence of Hemingway's idea of a hero

Closely related to the Stoic concept of "tough guy" that has been used to describe the novel of many of Hemingway's protagonist in a word. Some commentators believe that the best and most developed example of the code hero was in San Diego. In this sentence, "Code" means the rules or the code of conduct. In Hemingway's code, the main ideal for honor, courage, and a lot of stress, misery and suffering of life endurance is hugely present. Usually in the Hemingway story, the hero of the world is violent and chaos, and that violence and chaos always seems to win. The term "Code" determines the word glorious heroism; it will be a failure in the battle. In doing so, he decided that to achieve this: he has to become a man, or in other words has to prove his courage, and create his own value. The phrase "grace under pressure" is often used to describe the behavior of the code hero used by Hemigway. (Schmadel & Lutz, 2003)

Hemingway's Code Hero is defined as "a person who lived right, following the world he is sometimes confused, often troubled, always painful through which he attains honor, courage and endurance of the ideal". Measured as how good he was to deal with difficult situations, he said he challenges his own life. He believes in "nada," which means that there is no life after this life. The Code hero used by Hemingway is a typical hero of individualism and free will. He never shows emotion; never displays emotions and Commitments to Women and also has a program weakness. Quality, such as courage, adventure and travelling also defines the code hero. Ironically, the tough guy can also be dark, because it symbolizes the void, the abyss of nothingness (beach), and this also supports that death comes from fear. However, once he was brave enough to face death, he became a man, he must continue to fight to keep himself constantly proving his masculinity.

Hero or heroine of the code (such as Catherine Barkley) must fulfill his or her work to create a good personal meaning in a more meaningful manner. Nevertheless, life is full of misfortune, and the code is how the hero is known for his misfortune to endure. Finally, the code hero loses his life in conflict because he is going to die. But the most important thing is how he is going to face death. In fact, everyone should face death in the battlefield, in the ring and the big fish, because the face of death, teaches us how to live.
