Methodology

Qualitative data methods

The methods used to get qualitative data collection include secondary data. Secondary data technique includes articles and journals of Muslim scholars and their critics and views about the link between terrorism and Islam. The articles will be analyzed and selected from Phoenix e-library and online news websites. The online book reviews and journals will also be taken for the research study. Primary information will be gathered from telephonic and focus group interviews. Focus group is defined as the type of group with specific purpose to listen and gather information. The focus group consists of some fellow Muslim students. The interview questions are based on open ended with long discussion and debate among the group members. The researcher believes that people gathering, talking and discussing the research topic is a meaningful way of understanding their behaviour towards the research topic and also a meaningful way to create data for the quantitative data method, but the focus group were created to generate and collect qualitative data.

As the nature of the study topic, I must understand and obtain the perception of different people who are Muslims and have in depth knowledge of the religion Islam. Focus group is used to obtain information through understanding people's feelings and thinking about Islam and its association with jihad and terrorism. The reason why the researcher choose focus group and interview for its qualitative analysis is to involve the participants of the research project in all the research steps from the conceptualisation of the research topic to the collection and analysis of information's relevant to the objective of the research, then the analysis of the information collected based on the findings which is relevant to the research objective and to make sure he is not bias in any step which may influence the outcome of the focus group or the interviewee.

Telephonic interview is conducted with open ended questions. Population of the interview consists of fellow Muslims from Iran and Afghanistan who are already facing the link of Islam with jihad and terrorism and the violence that is created by this concept.

Research philosophy

The research philosophy of this study is framed within Realism, Interpretivism and positivism philosophy.

Realism

Realism is an idealistic philosophical direction, recognizing the reality lying outside the mind, which is interpreted as either being ideal objects (research study), or as an object of knowledge, independent of the subject's (the researcher) cognitive process and experience. In the medieval philosophy, one of the key along with nominalism and conceptualism solutions to a dispute about universals is to determine whether the ontological status of the general concepts, i.e., the question of their real (objective) exists.

Interpretivism

Interpretive researchers focused on studying large quantities of informed qualitative data to obtain information and a detail understanding of the activities of the reality based on every day life. Theories are developed on the basis of inductive logic. The Interpretivism researcher considers both object (focus of research) and subject (the researcher) ...
