INTRODUCTION

Global warming is perhaps one of the most talked about topics in the scientific world. The warnings of this issue are becoming louder day by day. Scientists are increasingly pointing out to the dangers that are rising from the emission of these gases. The primary source of these gases is the burning of fossil fuels. Each year, the recorded emissions are increasing at a staggering rate. This is corresponding to the increase in the average temperature of the worlds (Borick & Rabe, 2010).

Global warming is a consequence of human actions. However, there are some measures that can be taken to stop global warming. In order to reduce the impact of global warming, developed countries have started to move from conventional sources of energy to renewable sources in order to reduce the carbon footprint. Apart from developed countries, developing countries have also started to adopt renewable sources of energy mainly in order to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels. Another reason developing countries have started to adopt this form of energy is that they are the ones who are suffering the most from this issue (Borick & Rabe, 2010).

Some scientists think that the effects of global warming can be reversed while there are some who think that there is no cure for this issue. They say that the carbon dioxide and other gases released in the atmosphere are going to remain there for a very long time. No matter what scientists think about this issue, governments of several nations have taken up the task of trying to reduce their carbon footprint by switching to cleaner sources of energy like wind, tidal, solar, geothermal etc (Massawe, 2012).

DISCUSSION

With the average global temperature rising at an alarming rate, scientists have blamed the emission of greenhouse gases as the cause. These gases absorb infrared rays in the atmosphere thus, heating it. The atmosphere contains a certain amount of greenhouse gases that is essential to keep the atmospheric temperature at normal levels, but human involvement has increased the level of these gases to a much higher level. The major greenhouse gases are carbon monoxide, methane, and carbon dioxide. The problem with greenhouse gases is that once released into the atmosphere it is difficult to reverse the effect. Therefore, the only solution is to avoid releasing them (Dyurgerov & Meier, 2005).

Whatever the results of global warming are, humans are the ones to be blamed. According to the discoveries, industries are the leading cause of greenhouse gas emissions. It all started with the industrial revolution and is still continuing. The use of coal, gas, and oil are one of the major contributors to this issue. If the use of these materials is stopped, major improvements can be made (Borick & Rabe, 2010).
