To take the Ironman challenge, 15 people came to Waikiki on Feb 18th 1978. Each one of them received three sheets of paper before the race and a course description. On which the last page read “Swim 2.4 miles, Bike for 112 miles and Run 26.2 miles, Brag for the rest of your life!!”
From the tranquil of Waikiki this race was moved to the barren lava fields of Kona in Hawai'i onto a Big Island in 1981. Alone the coast, the black lava rock covers the panorama and the athletes' battle with the 45 mph crosswind “ho'omumuku”, scorching sun and 95 degree temperature. It is organized by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC).
To win the title of “Ironman”, Athletes have to embark on a 140.6 miles of journey, which will ultimately decide the performance or test of their body, spirit, and mind to earn the title. This race's mantra is “ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE”.
