INVESTIGATING THE TECHNOLOGY DELAY IN NEW YORK

Investigating the technology delay in New York City public libraries compared to private businesses technology

Technology and New York Public Library

CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION

Library technologies include a variety of systems for automating the delivery and maintenance of library resources and services. As in many other areas of information technology, the emergence of the Internet and the World Wide Web in particular, has revolutionized the ways library resources can be used and managed.

In preparing this chapter, we decided to frame extant knowledge about the use of technology in the classroom through the experiences of a fictitious first-year teacher we call Mary, who needs to know and make decisions about when and how to use technology in her classroom. Obviously the particular issues vary widely, but the general questions pertain to a range of situations, for example, teachers in public schools, graduate teaching assistants in chemistry or psychology, and professors of sociology need to examine and think critically about the use of technology to support learners. Mary and other educators have varied histories in using technology. We will devote the first part of this chapter to journeying with Mary through the research on the effectiveness of technology in the K-12 classroom. Later in the chapter, we discuss the other questions Mary raised about lack of technology use in her school and district. To begin, a few operational definitions are needed; specifically how we define technology and which classrooms we are talking about. The designing and implementation of electrical devices information services and technical operations is a time-consuming process. Nowadays, libraries spend many of time on implementing and upgrading electrical devices services and library purposes, although, the human components are usually overlooked. This occurrence is particularly significant in circulation and mechanical services localities in the libraries.

Problem Statement

As in many other areas of information technology, the emergence of the Internet and the World Wide Web in particular, has revolutionized the ways library resources can be used and managed.

Purpose

A digital library shares several features with a traditional library. Like a traditional library, a digital library supports services for information storage, management, search, retrieval, archiving, and preservation. Both include information in many forms, such as books, magazines, maps, artwork, audio, and video collections. Traditional library collections are controlled collections, where controlled means that information has been reviewed and screened for inclusion in the library, carefully documented and indexed or otherwise organized for efficient search and retrieval, and controlled with respect to circulation either within or outside the library.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as key differences between traditional and digital libraries are that the physical structures of a traditional library are replaced by virtual and logical structures in a digital one. A digital library does not need to be housed in a physical building, and users need not physically visit the library to access information. A digital library can exist at multiple virtual locations, and users can access library information from their homes, offices, cars, or any location supported ...
