I'm an African American that grew up poor in a small town in eastern Arkansas. My mother raised me and my three sisters as a single parent. My mother wasn't a parent who stressed the importance of education, so I struggle and barely made it through high school. Being a talented football player I had earned a full football scholarship to play football. In high school, African American was 80 percent of students. When I played College football, Whites made up over 90 percent of the students. Being a southern poor African American kid, I felt like I didn't belong in College due the rice White kids came from a background of a better school. I end on losing my scholarship due my grades. I ended up going back home and going to Community College. After going to school just 9 months, I then stop attending Community to work full time. I was working 13 to 15 hours a day. I was one of two African American working at that company. I felt like I didn't belong due to some of the comments that my White co workers joked about African Americans. I then quit that job and join the Army. I had been in the Army for 19 years working as an Operating Room Technician. I work in an environment to all the staff have a College degree. I have one year before retiring so I decided to go to Devry to earn a degree in Technical Management.

When I was eleven years old, my mother remarried and summoned her only child to Elmira, New York, to live with her. For me, who was quiet and shy, the transition was tough, but my athletic abilities, already apparent at a young age, helped earn him the respect of the kids at the local community center. Also, even in my youth, others noticed the special quality of my character that radiated sincerity, enthusiasm, and friendliness. I played tackle on Small Fry football for the Superior Buick team. Although I was big for my age, I never delivered punishing blows and often would simply pick the smaller kids up and wait for the myrtle to blow rather than slam them to the ground. (Ricoeur, 1991)

As a freshman at Elmira Free Academy, Ernie joined the junior varsity football team, but broke my wrist in the first game and was out for the rest of the season. However, it did not halt him from playing basketball. Having made the varsity team, I with my wrist still in a splint, came off the bench in my first game to score 22 points. I also played first base and pitched for the baseball team. Although baseball was the weakest of my three sports, several professional scouts kept an eye on him. (Freeman, 2006)
