Intraventricular Hemorrhage

Intraventricular Hemorrhage

Introduction

The purpose of this study is to expand the boundaries of our knowledge by exploring some relevant facts related to intraventricular haemorrage. Intra-ventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is an important predictor of adverse neurodevelopmental outcome. IVH risk factor identification may conduct improvement of quality of care in Neonatal Intensive Care Units.

Discussion & Analysis

IVH usually originates in the germinal matrix, an area situated in the lateral ventricles, near the head of the caudate nucleus, being mainly irrigated by perforating branches of the Recurrent Artery of Huebner. The germinal matrix is composed mainly of cells with high proliferative activity, which are precursors in weeks 10 and 20 of gestation of neurons and in the last quarter of astrocytes and oligodendroglías, the support elements in this area are poor and are involved in numerous vascular channels of thin walls, sometimes without layers of muscle and veins that drain the deep venous system.

When bleeding occurs it spreads to the lateral ventricles, often asymmetrically, with the tendency of blood to collect in the region of the occipital horns and the posterior fossa may cause occlusion of the exit of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the fourth ventricle by the action of the mass of blood or chemical arachnoiditis. You can also occlude the aqueduct and lock the subarachnoid space of the convexity, already immature in these little ones. All these events are those which may lead to the occurrence of hydrocephalus.

Intraventricular Hemorrhage (IVH) is the most common type of intracranial hemorrhage Newborn (RN) and is characteristic of prematurity. Today, it is of great importance due to:

The high incidence

The severity

The complications and sequelae

All of which has led to greater attention in order to reduce mortality and what is more important morbidity. The incidence of HIV in different reports is highly variable due to a predominance of ...
