According to the definition of Professor Henrey Mintzberg, a manager is a person, who is responsible of a sub unit, responsible for managing organization's tasks, and ensuring smooth operations of the organization (Lamond, 2003). For the purpose of this assignment, I have chosen Mr. Smith Jhonson, who is a middle level human resource manager at an airline named Peace Air. The airline is based in Canada. The interview was conducted over the phone, which gave me a lot of insight on the management skills required, to manage daily operations at workplace. Mr. Jhonson has about six years of working experience as a human resource manager. Mr. Jhonson has an undergraduate degree in human resource management from York University in Canada.
Professor Henry Mintzberg identified ten different management roles, which are, negotiator, monitor disseminator, figurehead, liaison, entrepreneur, resource allocator, leader, spokesperson, liaison and a disturbance handler. These roles are further re-grouped in three categories by (Robbins, Bergman, Stagg, & Coulter, 2008), which are, decision making roles, interpersonal roles and information roles. After the analysis of the interview, in my opinion, Mr. Jhonson is a monitor disseminator and a leader. The nature of his work involves reviwing health and safety issues of employees at the company. His role can also be termed as informational role, as he uses his position to obtain and review information regarding workplace environment (Mintzberg, 1994). There were in total seven questions asked by Mr. Jhonson relating his profession.
