ABSTRACT

The concept of internationalization is a new trend that has transformed new organizational strategic management practices and has increased the level of regional economic integration between the countries of the world. The recent years have marked great benefits in the form of economic growth and business progress for a substantial part of the world, including China whose overseas Outward Foreign Direct Investment (OFDIs) reached a level of $59 billion in inflows. This dissertation is aimed at understanding the motivations and hurdles behind the pursuit of internationalization particularly for Chinese Multinational Enterprises (MNEs). The study incorporates case study analysis for Yanzhou coal mining company along with the analysis of responses from an in-depth phonic interview with the employees of the mining company. We will attempt to study the internationalization of the coal mining enterprise in the global scenario, approaching it in a systematic manner. The study initiates with throwing light on the theoretical background of the internationalization, assessing the main benefits that it offers along with the potential challenges. We will then specify our study direction towards understanding Chinese Enterprises' motivations behind adopting a global presence in the world. We will analyze what makes China so popular among the FDIs genre, emphasizing on the Yanzhou Coal Mining Company that has lately pursued internationalization with high momentum when it acquired Felix strategically. The company stands firm on the international pedestal and we will see how it makes up for all the domestic inefficiencies that may have been encountered in the internal environments.
