United Nation's Role in International Terrorism

Introduction

A fundamental challenge that the international community is faced with is the phenomenon of terrorism which can compromise the basic values of the United Nations, namely respect for human rights, the protection of civilians, tolerance between nations and people and resolution of various kinds of conflict. It also threatens the security human and can have a devastating effect on the development and sustainable peace.

Discussion & Analysis

Terrorism hurts the economy and development in general, thus compromising improving the living conditions of the poor. Its adverse effects on the development are particularly acute in countries and regions of conflict where governance systems are weak, the criminal justice system inadequate and economic stability precarious. While crime prevention strategies have a long history of success and have been an integral part of the criminal justice system in the United States, Canada, and Europe, they are not common in developing countries. However, these strategies have been gaining acceptance in many developing nations. While the United Nations (UN) can be credited with many of the most successful initiatives and programs, it is by no means the only international player. Some of the credit for the paradigm shift in international crime prevention can be attributed to contributions from nongovernmental organizations and local governments. Both have played a critical role in bringing about change.

Terrorism and the impression of vulnerability to attacks scare away investment and economic activities. Investors often view domestic and foreign terrorism and the vulnerability of a country attacks as a sign of instability and a risk to the safety of investments. In addition, terrorism erodes the social and human capital of a country being given that the attacks and the fear of becoming a victim degrade the quality of life and low Wind pushing skilled workers to leave the country. The attacks and the fear they rise also undermine the enjoyment of fundamental rights, including freedom of movement and access to employment opportunities and education, and discourage the accumulation of goods. That is why the building the capacity of the criminal justice system to punish and combat terrorism is a crucial element of any comprehensive development strategy.

The main goal of the Safer Cities initiative is capacity building at the local level to effectuate an effective crime prevention strategy. Moreover, the hope is that the initiative will foster a culture of crime prevention. The Safer Cities initiative has expanded and now boasts 16 local projects spread over five continents. The hallmarks of all the Safer Cities initiatives are (1) encouraging good government through transparency and accountability, (2) capacity building, and (3) free exchange of experiences between cities and residents including previously marginalized populations.

Like other crime prevention initiatives, Safer Cities systematically identifies potential stakeholders to create a local safety coalition along with elected officials guided by an initiative coordinator.
