Case Study: Internal Final Case Briefing Report

Introduction to Case

As a medico-legal case investigator, I have been assigned the duty to prepare an internal final case briefing report for assistance to the Chief Medical Examiner (ME). This internal briefing report has to be attached with the case report and the autopsy report in order to be presented before the Chief Medical officer, so that he may proceed with the investigation of the case to find out probable cause of death involved.

This case refers to the murder of a 23-24 years old girl, named Sharon Jane Miller (DOB 10/07/1987) who was discovered in her apartment by her sister. The evidences gathered in the case clearly laid out that the murder was committed by the girl's boyfriend named Todd Nathan Hughes, a criminal himself. This internal briefing report will further consist of discussions on the practical evidences gathered from the death spot, the analysis of the information from these sources, and other relevant aspects of this case that might assist the ME in his search for the real culprit.

Discussion

In a brutal attempt of murder, Sharon Miller was subjected to a horrifying killing in which her body parts were badly damaged. Blood was found to be emanating from her private parts while there were clear bruises on her face and chest. The victim was identified by her sister (Valerie Edith Anderson) while she went to pick Sharon Miller form her apartment to go to a lunch together with her.

The victim had a relationship with her boyfriend Todd Nathan Hughes, with whom she broke up recently after a four-year old relationship. Both Miller and Hughes had criminal records of their past, related to drug abuse and domestic violence incidents. While the evidences and other relevant information so gathered clearly support that Hughes might be the only murderer involved in this case, his own mother argues his criminal involvement with Sharon's murder.

Let us analyze, in separate sections, the information gathered from various sources that will further form a clear picture of the ME to analyze the required loopholes in the case, in an attempt to justify the role of the suspect in her death.

Family Members

There are three family members of Sharon Miller that have a say in this case. First and most importantly, was Miller's sister, who found her dead in her apartment while she aimed to pick up her sister for lunch. It is to be noted that the family of Miller was happy after their break-up because the boyfriend Hughes was largely criminal and abusive.
