INTERMODAL FREIGHT

Intermodal Freight in the United States

Introduction

In the field of freight transportation, inter modal transport is used successively use two or more modes of transport, to carry out the transportation of a payload from an origin to a destination point. Multimodal transport or inter modal or combined transport is to provide transportation by successively taking different modes of transport, for the purpose of delivering the product to its destination. It concerns mainly the goods. Intermodal, the term applies to the extent that logistics unified applies throughout the transportation, whatever the mode, both to limit the handling and conduct monitoring (Ambrose, Stephen, 2000, p. 31). Combined transport is defined as an "intermodal transport where the major in US is by rail, inland waterways or sea and initial and / or terminals by road are as short as possible". In turn, inter modal transport is defined as, "the movement of goods using two or more modes of transport but in the same unit or the same road vehicle, and without handling the unloading, which is distinguished from transport multimodal ("routing goods by two different modes of transport or more") (Ambrose, Stephen, 2000, p. 31). In freight transport, inter modal transport is the articulation between different modes of transport using a single load measurement (usually containers) in order to make faster and more efficiently transfer operations of materials and goods. The subdivisions of land transportation (truck and rail) and subdivisions of the transport water (maritime transport routes and inland waterways) are regarded as different modes. Therefore, Intermodal freight primarily deals with the transportation of goods, using two or more mode of transportation, for the purpose of delivering the goods from the place of its origin to the place of its destination (Ambrose, Stephen, 2000, p. 31).

Thesis Statement

Intermodal freight in the United States is a big business, but what does it take to make it work. I will talk about the equipment required to transport it, from origin to destination. Customer service and customer satisfaction are important, as we explore what it takes to meet these needs. Focusing on these expectations, can meet those needs and lead to a long term relationship for everyone.

Equipments required for Transportation

Intermodal freight typically requires the following types of equipments:

Container

A container is used for the transportation of goods through air, sea or river, land transport and multi modal transport. The container dimensions are standardized for ease of handling. By extension, it is called a packing container used to transport large bulky or heavy objects: engines, machinery, small vehicles, etc. The containers are usually made primarily of steel cut, but also come in aluminum and some other plywood reinforced fiberglass. In most cases, the floor is wood, although there are some bamboos. Interior is specially coated anti-moisture, to prevent moisture during the trip. Another defining feature is the presence of containers in each of its corners, lodging for twist locks, allowing them to be snagged by specific cranes, and their lashing in both ships and ...
