Integration of Evidence-based Practice into Professional Nursing Practice

Evidence-based Practice

During the 1980's, the term “evidence-based” medicine surfaced to describe the approach that used scientific evidence to determine the best practice. Evidence-based practice is a process that entails reviewing and evaluating the most reliable and updated research in patient care. The goal of evidence-based practice is to provide the highest quality care while being most cost efficient. It is a process based on the accumulation, interpretation, and integration of derived evidence. This is best available to improve the quality of patient care (Reverby, 1987).

Evidence-Based Education (EBE) is defined as the process by which nurses make clinical decisions using the best available evidence supported the research, clinical experience and patient preferences in the context of available resources. EBE can also be defined as the conscious, explicit and judicious use of information derived from research-based theory for making decisions about care delivery to individuals or groups taking into account their individual needs and preferences. Conscious and explicit use from the world of thought of the nurses, the benefits of the positivist model of synthesis of the literature of EBM, as part of a critical, reflexive and phenomenological such that visible health perspectives invisible by the hegemonic thought(Judd, 2004).
