Installing VOIP Infrastructure on Existing Enterprise Network

Introduction

Telephony has been a source of human interaction since the time it has been invented. But as with all the other things there have been tremendous change in how this communication takes place. With the advent of Internet technologies and high speed data connectivity, a new era of telephony technologies has arisen. One of them is Voice over IP. There has been a significant appeal for this technology because it combines both voice and data networks which is a requirement for today's world. VOIP also has many other advantages over traditional telephony system (Wallingford, 2006).

First and foremost is reduction in cost. The others are to simplify support of voice operations as well as enable converged applications such as voicemail, caller ID, conference, music-on-hold, etc. Due to this there has been a gradual detour from traditional TDM to IP telephony. The switch has been gradually increasing from 49.5% in 2004 to 53% in 2005 (Yedwab and Brandstadter, 2005). Organizations continue to use their traditional phone system due to the good quality voice provided by this system, lack of time and funds for up-gradation. But now many organizations small and big have started working towards a Request for Proposal to upgrade their wired networks. The main problem that most organizations are facing is how to make this switch as smooth as possible without undue expense. Today most organizations want is a readymade solution which can be directly applied to their network by making appropriate changes to it. They fail to recognize that by doing so they will be doing more harm than benefit which will ultimately result in more money.

Organizations need to analyze their network to decipher their network needs and accordingly think of a solution which is the best possible for their network. They need to prepare an RFP which will cater to all their needs. Thus the objective ofthis research is to provide a complete guide to small organizations for deployment of VOIP solution. Organizations also want their network to be of the same quality as their previous network but at a low cost. Thus the second objective of my research is to design a system which would be comparable to the present PSTN systems in terms of quality of voice and would be of comparable cost (Olejniczak, 2009).

Statement Problem

Conducting a need analysis for an ABC company's wired network to prepare an RFP for the wired network upgrade in a cost effective manner.

Design a VOIP LAN network which would fulfill the requirements of the Request of Proposal.

The main aim of this project is to develop a Request for Proposal for an ABC Company. The Request for Proposal is to be developed in such a way that it will be effective and efficient in terms of cost and technology. The second objective of this project is to design a network ...
