Information System for Super MediCo

Introduction

Super MediCo is a leading health care business; it runs 250 hospitals and more than 1,800 clinics around the world. Some health care centres are operating as large medical centres providing all medical facilities, while some are smaller specialists units. The business owns more than 400,000 employees in various capacities. The major business and health care tasks use manual information systems. However, under the impact of a recent painkiller scandal, the higher management has decided to deploy the information technology for improving safety of the patients. The management executives convince that advanced information technology infrastructure will help their business, in improving the performance and better management of the resources (Rainer R.K. & Turban E., 2008). To improve the health care service quality and patient safety, SuperMedico mainly concerns for the development of information system, which shall help them, in recording all the incidents efficiently and timely.

I am a senior commercial programmer, and currently I am working for the software development department of the SuperMedico. Our team has already been working on the improvement of SuperMediCo's 5 million lines of legacy COBOL code. The applications, which we have developed till yet, relate to finance, such as purchasing, billing and payroll. Many employees in these departments of the SuperMedico are willing to try a new application framework such as .NET, or Java EE 6, but the senior staff members believe that COBOL would be more beneficial for their system I have plans to work with some architecture that shall facilitate all the employees.

In this paper, I discuss the key issues of the development of new information system.

Information System Development

SuperMedico is planning for deployment of information systems, to improve the monitoring and reporting of incidents occurring at their health care centres worldwide. The operating clinics and health care centres under the SuperMedicos are already recording the incidents manually, but for quick data entry and collaboration, use of information technology in the process is mandatory. This will help in improving the collaboration among the employees and their decision making capabilities, as they will know about the same incidents happened at any other centre and steps taken in handling that. Before executing the planning and designing stage of the information system, it would be helpful look in the key issues of development. The understanding of key issues is important for the developers, the management authorities of the health care business and employees who will be the users of this information system. This will give us an insight about the software architectural and information assurance issues. We will decide the enterprise application development framework based upon the findings about these issues and their comparisons.
