CHAPTER 01: INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

In this chapter will introduce the research back ground and overall research problem of this study. This chapter will seek to provide an understanding about the study in focus. Furthermore, it will discuss the background of the study, purpose of understanding this research, the aims and objectives of the research, significance of the research and research questions.

This research seeks to develop knowledge about the e-health effort in Saudi Arabia by understanding the management of health information role in hospitals and other health care centers and investigates to develops a concept of information management in e- health sector by identifies the barriers to adoption of ( EMR ) in a hospital and other health care centers in Saudi Arabia. The challenge of measuring the quality of service in healthcare requires us to view the problem from multiple perspectives. The chapter will describes the research background, discusses the research problem and objectives, the significance of the research and contribution, therefore it will be an outline of the thesis (Dash, 2005, 1).

The health management information system provides an elaborated hospital administration system database solution which streamlines operations and practices, and the flow of patients in healthcare facilities for efficient coordination. Therefore, the system ensures that better services are provided to patients. Another advantage of the health information systems is that doctors can specify the required medical tests through the links to the diagnostic modules. Furthermore, the results to the test can be delivered through the same system. With the help of this process, doctors can save crucial time which can be utilized in the treatment of other patients. The results can be indicated by statistics as well.

For the purpose of maintaining integrity and keeping the system transparent, the health information system will also have a comprehensive billing system. Therefore, if a patient visits the hospital, the care taker, or the person who comes along with the patient, will be handed over a bank teller.
