Influence of Generation Gap on SRL Activities

Introduction

Every family has its own history and individual culture that passes through generations. The topic open to debate is the difference in life style of the same family members belonging to different generations. A wide generation gap exists between me and my grandfather as we, both belong to different ages. We have experienced life differently and hold different perception towards almost everything. This generation gap between me, my father, and grandfather affects our preference of sports, leisure and Recreation activities. I love playing baseball, uploading videos and surfing the internet in my free time, whereas my grandfather thinks of these activities as a waste of time. We have different hobbies, passions and spend our life the way we choose.

Lives of the Three Generations

People belonging to different generations have a different set of choices. Before moving in the social historical context of the three generations, their lifestyle and activities, it is important to have an understanding of the environment, culture and societal norms of the these generations.

Generation Y

Generation Y, also called millennials, is the one to which we, youngsters belong; with birthdays in between 1981 and 2000. People belonging to Generation Y are almost nearing the age of working in the professional arena. Majority of the newly joined the workforce in organizations are of this generation. Since this generation grew up in a highly globalized world, with technological innovation taking place frequently, they are very tech-savvy and dependent on electronic gadgets as part of their personal necessity (Sheahan, p.4). These people are also very achievement oriented as they have been seeing increasing competition at every stage of life. Generation Y, normally loves to work in teams and would always prioritize family life over their work.

Baby Boomers

Another Generation, to which our parents belong to, is referred as the baby boomers generation. Born in between 1946 and 1964, most of this generation is already well established and well settled in their professional and personal life. A major chunk of today's senior level executives, managers and leaders are part of this generation. Baby boomers grew at the time of a dramatic social change in America as a lot of them are also the offspring of the returnees from World War II. Some of their common traits include competitiveness, being highly work-centric and independent. (Willis, P.4)

War Veterans

The generation of veterans belongs to our ancestors, that is, our grandparents who relates to the era of War veterans. Also, known as the traditionalists or the Silent generation, they are, mostly the retired people. This is a very hard working generation with high ethical values. They believe in loyalty, traditional moral values, submission, consistency and commitment to whatever work they do (Rowe, p.5). Aged people are also very rigid in nature as they show very little flexibility towards new research or technology.
