CHAPTER 01: INTRODUCTION

With over 500 million users and counting, Facebook has stayed true to its mission to give people the power to share making this world an open and inter-connected place to live in. (Blow, 2005).

But, while Facebook helps people to connect with each other, it has also caused many to separate. There have been many reported cases of couples breaking up and filing for divorce. The convenience of social networking, instant messaging, online meeting and establishing relationships with new people, has provided endless opportunities for flirting that were previously out of reach. From friendly messages to full blown illicit affairs, thousands of cases have recently reported that Facebook alone is the reason for their divorce.

Online infidelity is more about touching needs not being met, than physical unfaithfulness. Facebook is an open forum with millions of users of different religion, nationality, mind set and interests. It provides an individual to interact with virtually the whole world. Thus, it is obvious that couples have issues about having opposite gender friends, interaction with people, which might lead the relation to a point from where there is no restoration.

At the start of relationships, an individual seems to be naturally attracted towards the other person, but with the passage of time, things start to fade out. Consultant can help a couple to reconnect and discover each other's good qualities and even find new, to help them re-join and become a stronger couple (Cooper, 2008).

Statement of Problem

The topic of this project is infidelity through Facebook. The internet provides an individual with innumerable options to make friends. The increased usage of the Internet and the fact that people spend most of their time online, have created problems that never existed before. Apart from there being an opportunity to increase the new relationships on this virtual world, there are also issues that cause irreversible damages to old relationships.

People use Facebook to increase their social circle and reduce boredom, but when one relationship becomes strong, the others may feel left out. The occurrence of problems and conflicts rise simultaneously with the rise in possibilities of the real relations being harmed. The issues and problems faced by online infidelity couples often lead them to consult with the professional counselor, psychologist or therapist for help.
