Cranes are the most useful and versatile piece of equipment on a vast majority of construction projects. They vary widely in configuration, capacity, mode of operation, intensity of utilization and cost. On a large project, a contractor may have an assortment of cranes for different purposes. Cranes are used in the industry where lifting of big things are required. Some common kinds of cranes used in a specific profession are towers and movable cranes in production works, bridges and pillar cranes in manufacturing works. Tower and movable cranes are functioned largely from a cabin. Slinger ties and loosens the load and the operator works in the cabin. The smaller cranes hanging from the elevator are operated by the control unit where the operator can perform his sling procedure. When the lifting tool is operated from remoteness, for example vacuum pad or lifting magnet, crane worker can tie or unlock the load with the help of other staff present in the cabin (accidentinvestigation.eu).
The latest research says that lack of information between the workers and the surroundings can cause accidents. In a nutshell, the research says that, structural power and consistency, strong lifting appliances and tools should be sufficient to remove the risk of accidents caused by technical failure. To eliminate the risks of accidents, the abilities and qualifications of operators should be match to the nature of the work. If the worker does not have enough visibility, or does not have proper information about the working area, he may steer the load to an incorrect area which may cause accident. Several crane accidents occurred during processes of lifting objects (craneaccidents.com).
Recent Significant Industrial Crane Accidents
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has reported an average of 89 crane accident-related fatalities in the United States each year. 32 percent of these deaths were caused when a heavy object is struck by the crane controller, 27 percent were caused by electric shock when the cranes come into contact with a live power line. The remaining causes of death by crane boom or cable failure, resulting in tragic accidents (craneaccidents.com).
