The indigenous people of Australia, known as Australian Aborigines have the oldest cultural history in the world. In 1788, the British prison population of over a thousand people, including guards and their families, were established in New South Wales as discussed in the novel Prisoner of Zenda. Other British colonies began in other parts of Australia. In 1890, people wanted to become an independent nation. On January 1, 1901, the Australian colonies officially became the State of Australia (McManus, 2007).
