In this paper I will recount the process of colonization upon Indigenous Australians, and very expressly I will recount the socio-cultural influence of European town on Indigenous health. I will furthermore try to illustrate why Aboriginal persons have not acculturated effectively to European health systems.
Discussion
It is well documented that the poor wellbeing of Indigenous Australians in up to designated day humanity can be mostly attributed to the European invasion. After James Cook come to the shore of Sydney Cove in 1788 and colonization of the land started, the preceding tranquility of Aboriginal people's inhabits altered forever. Colonisation not only disturbed customary Aboriginal way of life but it furthermore has been recognised as the most significant factor assisting to the poor wellbeing rank of Aboriginal persons today. (Bowern 2006)
It is absolutely crucial to realise the significance of wellbeing to Aboriginal persons because opposing to the Western significance of well-being, it is a multi-dimensional notion adopting all facets of living. According to the National Aboriginal and Island Health Organisation the delineation of wellbeing is as follows: “Not just the personal well being of the one-by-one but the communal emotional and heritage well-being of the entire community. This is a whole-of-life outlook and it furthermore encompasses the cyclical notion of life.” (Eckermann et al 1992) Reports furthermore propose that Aboriginal persons were somewhat free of infection and they relished better wellbeing situation contrasted to the large percentage of the British community at the time of colonization. (Joel 2009)
The colonizers, generally Christian, had a spectacularly differing outlook of wellbeing to that of the colonized, and so there is not good syncretism between Western health practioners and Aboriginal people.. For demonstration, an Aboriginal individual might glimpse (and often does) a clinic as a location to pass away, and so they will stay away from clinics at all costs. They furthermore don't like to take medication since they don't have the feeling that they should take things if they aren't sick. So resistence in this specific example takes the pattern of not going to the medical practitioner, not taking surgery, or easily coming back to their own community healers and making their own medicines, for example amarrh, which they make from body-fluid and saliva.
