CHAPTER 01: INTRODUCTION
Outline of the Study
This study will be divided into six (6) chapters including Introduction, Literature Review, Methodology, Results, Discussion, and Recommendations & Conclusion, which would intend and display a detailed analysis of Condition-based Maintenance. The first chapter will be the Introduction. The Introduction chapter will present a background of the study, aims and objectives, and research questions. The second chapter will be the literature review. In this chapter a review of related studies will be presented. In order to perform the task, only reliable and credible sources will be used.
The third chapter will be the methodology of the thesis. For the methodology, our data collection tool would be the questionnaire that individuals could be used to pave way for the purpose of creating a better understanding and comprehension in the light of developing an effective maintenance strategy. The fourth chapter will present findings of the study which will be accompanied with discussion. The fifth chapter will be the Conclusion in which results will be presented.
1.2 Background of the Study
Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) is the up-to-date maintenance method considered two generations ahead of Planned Maintenance System (PMS). The goal of CBM is to increase reliability and availability of machinery, while minimizing downtime, labour and repair costs (Demirci & Haciyev, 2010, pp. 95).
It involves the use of diagnostic (non-destructive) technologies such as Vibration Analysis, Infrared Thermography and Oil Analysis in order to monitor machinery condition, without disruption of their normal operation. The processes involve periodical monitoring of the machinery and evaluation of its operating condition. Repair or maintenance is carried out based upon the detection and fault diagnosis of the machinery towards a condition of failure (Linton, 2011, pp. 30).
Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) offers the promise of upgrading the effectiveness of maintenance systems in a method that no alternate single thought has ever matched. This comparatively revamped approach to maintenance utilizes data drawn around the same time as operations or alternately maintenance interims to figure the necessity for more or destiny maintenance. It develops the ideas of prescient maintenance by utilizing data from both on-line and logged off maintenance tests.
The strategy is used for determining the current condition of machines, and thus helps in planning a maintenance schedule. The condition of items is determined through complex equipment as well as objective measurements including temperature, shock pulse measurements, vibration, and others.
