This film is an adaptation from a novel by Fanny Hurst highly controversial, and it is also the remake of a film of the same title released in 1934. I have not read the book or seen the movie, so my impressions are based only on production of 1959.
Firstly, this is a film made at a time when the performance of players was not what they are today: they were very close to the theater, very extravagant. So, do not judge a film of the 50s on this point because it was the way to go.
Actually the best way to describe it would be to say that the film is sincere, that the film denounces racism and the film is staggering (www.suite101.com).
Lana Turner gives a fine performance in the role of Lora. It is difficult at first to believe she is a woman looking for a job when she already has the look of a star. But otherwise apart from that it is very good and I think she manages to reach the public in some way. This is not the best actress of the film but she plays her character well and with conviction.
Sandra Dee was not a great actress in my opinion, but since this is the first time I see her in action, I cannot say with certainty. His role here is bubbly and energetic, and she fills out the shoes of Susie, the young blond girl who, despite his upbeat attitude always hide deep feelings and very serious.
Susan Kohner, first, I did not like. I found static and devoid of charm. But gradually as the film progressed, I began to love his character and a lot to desire to see more and more. Sarah Jane is the pivotal character in the film, she is the one causing the most problems and whose actions lead to reactions around him. Kohner played extremely well and is gradually reaching the public (Landy, Pp 15).
John Gavin plays the role of Steve, the photographer, friend, lover potential and handyman for those women who all love it. Gavin is charming and very talented, and although her role does not give much bite in which it performs its job perfectly.
Finally, the treasure of this film is Juanita Moore who produced this film. This woman is charming, generous, beautiful, etc. I have seen this actress in any other movie, but I assure you ...
