History of How Nutrition Has Affected Academic Achievement in Eastern Kentucky
The general state of health and welfare of students affects their academic performance. In turn, academic achievement of students affects their health in the future.4 schools, then, can be a place to help children healthier. This may mean that schools can directly affect the health of children through physical activity or health education teaching, or that schools can help families gain access to the health of their children.
A strategy to address childhood obesity is increasing physical activity of children. Since children spend much time in school, the school can be a place of increasing activity. However, a recent survey indicates that 7 out of 10 students from Kentucky high school (69%) did not attend physical education classes.
Almost all residents of Kentucky (96%) and Eastern Kentucky (94%) favored requiring schools to provide 30 minutes of physical activity or physical education to students each day. While most of Eastern Kentucky Eastern Kentucky strongly favored in general, slightly fewer Eastern Kentuckians favor it overall.
The dramatic increase in our understanding of the brain's development throughout childhood has increased our knowledge of the significance of micronutrients, such as iron and vitamin B-12, for this development (Symons 2007). Deficiencies of these micronutrients have been shown to have an impact on students' academic achievement.
