The Company

After starting off as a small producer of cooking oil in 1945, Wipro, one of India's most admired companies, is today a large diversified corporation by Indian standards. In quick time, Wipro has built three new businesses - enterprise solutions, infrastructure management and business process outsourcing that together account for 30% of total software revenues. These businesses are expected to be the company's major growth drivers in the future. The main challenge which Wipro faces, is to develop the necessary human resources. Over the years, Wipro has built a strong and powerful top-management team of professionals.

Every one is aware of the deteriorating economic environment with which work organizations are faced. There have been clear indications of increasingly difficulty for firms in maintaining economic stability, largely in consequence of increasingly global competition, fragmentation of mass markets and a general decline in consumer demand.1

Even those countries which by standard of excellence have performed well economically the young dragon of south Asia such as India, are keenly aware that economic growth will be maintained at present rate only if greater value added activity is generated. (Leap 2008)

This implies the successful emergence of a new generation of technologically complex and desirable products together with a trained, motivated, and efficient labor force to produce them.

One of the obvious effects of this turbulence is clearly visible in the increased level of competition which firms are experiencing in every market. The push for increasing efficiency, particularly with regards to the use of labor at all levels is widely seen as one of the few remaining means whereby organization can hold on to or regain the competitive edge.2 The consequences of under-investment in technology are well understood the consequences of inefficient use of human resource have begun to be realized with an increase sense of urgency.

Human Resource Management

Over the years, Wipro had built a strong and powerful top-management team of professionals. By and large, Wipro filled up senior positions from within, except for some specific specialised requirements.

Wipro laid a strong emphasis on shared beliefs and leadership values. In 1973, much before it became fashionable to do so, Premji had articulated a set of beliefs that would shape Wipro's strong and distinctive organizational culture.

The Customer

The India operations of a leading research based consumer healthcare and pharmaceuticals company with presence in 40 countries and 107 manufacturing locations.

The Challenge

The organization wanted an intranet solution that would provide a common platform and interface for all the employees. The system should help them reduce paper-work and enhance productivity through self-service functionality. The applications would form an integrated package for the entire HR team both in the corporate office and the regional offices.

The Solution

Wipro's solution included providing rich functionality for their intranet portal by integrating with backend JD Edwards ERP. Applications for B2E communication (CEO's space, Policies, etc.), Workflows for Internal Vacancies, Medical Insurance, Discussion Forums, Tax Calculators were the key applications ...
